55 days ago I did the unthinkable. I stared addiction in the face and broke free.
Just kidding, I just stopped drinking coffee for like a month. Yea, there were some side effects for 3 or 4 days, but I just took it easy on those days (thankfully I work from home so I didn’t have to spend my days falling asleep on the job). But ever since those side effects wore off, I’ve been feeling a million times better than I did with coffee.
I guess I should start from the beginning.
I didn’t give up coffee by choice. I don’t know who in their right mind would do that (weirdos). I started on a doctor prescribed anti-inflammatory diet, which included giving up almost all caffeine. Obviously I didn’t want to give up my beloved coffee, but alas, what choice did I have? I had been living with unexplained fatigue for the past year, and I was willing to do anything I needed to get my life (and energy) back together. Okay so yea I gave up coffee but what of it?
Well here’s why you should care:
Coffee is delicious and amazing. Coffee is a hug in a mug. I think we can all agree on that.
But what about those days when coffee isn’t available to you? Like when you’re traveling somewhere and you can’t get your hands on a cup of coffee till 2PM meanwhile, you’ve had a blasted headache all day? Yea, on those days it’s nice to not HAVE to get a cup of coffee in order to keep yourself from feeling horrible.
Or, my personal favorite. When you get a cold. Ugh. Whenever I get a cold, the last thing in the world I want is coffee But then my head starts pounding and I’m like oh my word I’ve got to drink some to get this pounding headache away!
Coffee is such a delicious luxury. But when addiction strikes (addiction in the sense that you feel bad if you can’t have it), it kind of takes the joy away (for me anyways…).
I definitely intend on bringing coffee back into my life. But I’m truly enjoying the benefits that I seek to have without it (aka more energy for some reason). But I think coffee will kind of be a special occasion type thing for a few reasons:
– I’ve gotten in the habit of drinking green tea every morning and I kind of think I like that better (at least for now).
– It truly is so freeing to not feel like I HAVE to have something to keep from getting a headache!
– I actually have MORE energy without the caffeine. Crazy right??
– Coffee is like SO good with desserts. That’s kind of the thing when I visit my family and it makes it more special (it’s no fun to drink coffee alone every morning).
– When I travel to Florida for work, I’ll definitely drink coffee because it’s part of my Florida work routine and man it was weird last time being there drinking tea.
I’m not suggesting everyone should give up coffee, I just wanted to share my personal experiences and thoughts!
Have you given up coffee before? Did you stick to it, or bring it back into your life?
